Julia Broderick Scholarship
About the 2012/13 Julia Broderick Scholarship Award
The Canada West Coast Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication is pleased to announce that Leslie Ste. Marie has been awarded the Julia Broderick Scholarship for the 2012/2013 season.
Leslie recently completed the Print Futures Professional Writing program at Douglas College in New Westminster, where she completed a practicum placement with the SFU Office of the Vice-President, Research. The Print Futures certificate is actually her second certification with honours from Douglas College, having earned her first diploma in Computer Information Systems in 1990. Between certificates, she worked as a software developer for BC Tel (now Telus).
“Leslie’s application was one of the most impressive I’ve seen during my time on the scholarship committee,” said scholarship co-ordinator Rob Hughes. “Her transcript was impeccable, and, judging by the testimonials from her instructors, she’s already an accomplished technical communicator. I wish her all the best in her chosen profession!”
You can read Leslie’s winning application letter here.
Julia Broderick embodied all that technical communicators should be: intelligent, inquisitive, and enthusiastic. She was renowned for her adeptness in documenting the complexities of hardware and software and went out of her way to coach new writers. She maintained a cheerful disposition during her battle with cancer and was an inspiration to everyone who knew her.
The STC Canada West Coast Julia Broderick Scholarship was established to reward deserving students who embody Julia’s legacy of excellence, determination, and devotion to the technical communication.
Eligibility is extended to all students enrolled in a post-secondary writing program who wish to pursue a career in technical communication. A scholarship of $500 will be awarded to a successful applicant to help establish a career in the profession after graduation.
The next call for applications will be in early 2014. The application documents available on this page will be updated then. To view the 2013 application, download the full details (.pdf). Then complete and submit the application form (.doc).
