Volunteers Give to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank

As the program year winds to a close, it is time once again to honour the volunteers who give generously of their time, energy, and thoughtfulness to serve the chapter and our members. We will be including a short volunteer appreciation ceremony in the program activities at the final program of the year on May 18.

The chapter budgets an honorarium for each volunteer as a token of appreciation. This year, 32 of the chapter’s volunteers chose to donate their honorarium to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank (https://www.foodbank.bc.ca/). The total donated was $640, which due to the food bank’s partnerships in the community translates into $1,920 worth of nutritious groceries for people in need in our community. Wow! That’s a lot of canned beans!

They haven’t posted data yet for 2010, but for 2009 the food bank reports:
“Most provinces have recorded an increase in food bank usage between March 2008–March 2009. In British Columbia‚ there was a staggering increase of 15 percent. In the month of March 2009 alone, over 72‚000 Canadians used a food bank for the first time.”
Come on out to the program evening and give some applause to our volunteers, who are generous in so many ways. This chapter truly would not exist without them. And there’s a rumour there might be cake!
