Hello,

I signed a three-month contract that includes the following: “The consultant shall provide the services for a minimum of twenty-four hours a week to a maximum of forty hours per week.” I have yet to do any work for them so I’m wondering if this means I can charge them for my time anyway. Seems WAY too good to be true but someone suggested this might be the case.

Has anyone seen something like this before? Is this standard?

Thanks,

Maeve

If you have the chutzpah and you think it will get their attention, you could try it. :-)

It sounds like they are not really keeping their side of the bargain, if they committed to providing you with a minimum of 24 hours per week of work. I’d push to get the work flowing as a first step. If you are not taking other work in order to be free for them, make sure they understand that.

Thanks for the advice Tracey. I asked Payroll about it and I was told that clause is no longer in my contract. Even though it is… But I didn’t argue it because a) I want to keep working for them and b) it never seemed quite right.

I don’t know who you’re working for here—and I’m not asking—but I’d say these incidents together are a pretty clear indication that you can’t count on these guys. If you’re expecting this to bear fruit and you don’t mind waiting, fair enough; but if something better comes along, I’d suggest you take it and don’t look back.  :-)

Good luck!
-Tracey.
