Hello all,

I am brand new to the profession and to the STC. I am a VCC Business and Technical Writing student. I would like to be an active member of the STC and wonder if anybody has advice on the best way to get started? Where does a new member begin? I am also interested in networking, SIGs, and professional development.

Thank you for any advice you may have for me!

Danielle

Hi Danielle! Welcome to the STC.

We would love to have you become an active member and there are many ways to do that. Some of our most active members are volunteers (on a major or minor scale) for the STC West Coast. Joining that core group is a great way to quickly make friends that you can hang out with and network with, etc. Plus that group is due for a celebratory lunch in June, so that’s going to be a fun place to be.  :-)

To volunteer, contact the .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)(send email to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)).

Another way you can hang out is on this forum, which you have already found. Feel free to add your two cents in to any topic, we are always glad to hear from everyone. As our “Forum Gardener” (and I am still trying to work out exactly what that means) one of my challenges has been to figure out how to help us come together as an online community. So please continue to post questions here, this is exactly the right way to do this.

These two ideas above are most familiar to me, as they happen to be how I contribute to the STC. The positive experiences I’ve had from these activities are why I find the STC-CWC is such a great group to hang out with.

What did I miss, everyone? What else do Danielle and the other newer members need to know?  :-)

Hi Danielle,

Welcome to the chapter! We’re happy to have some new energy on the team, and I’m sure that Heather Sommerville (our volunteer coordinator) will find something that fits with your goals.

Let us know if you have any questions.
