How do we participate in “Call for Change” online?

Sorry if this is obvious to everyone else :-) but I understand the physical meeting May 31 has been transmuted to an online forum. You want our participation between May 14-31, ok. But what kinds of participation are you looking for?

Do you want us to suggest projects and step forward to do them? Brainstorm a bunch of ideas and vote on which ones are most interesting to the group? Sign up for tasks that are already being considered, that just need a sponsor?

I would really like to contribute, but I could use some direction so I know what we’re building.

I don’t have a lot of experience with forums and wikis but I hereby volunteer to be a wiki gardener.

What else do we need?

I had posted this thread:
http://www.stcwestcoast.ca/index.php/forums/viewthread/5/

Right now, it’s up to the members to contribute ideas so we know what kind of chapter we want to have. Like Neo says in the Matrix:

I don’t know the future. I didn’t come here to tell you how this is going to end. I came here to tell you how it’s going to begin.

I suggest trying a “design the experience” exercise:
http://www.ugleah.com//portfolio/AP_Template_Design_the_Experience.pdf

Think of absolute worst STC chapter—perhaps it’s non-existent, perhaps you have a chapter but no activity, perhaps you have programs that are so deadly boring you’d rather eat cockroaches than attend a meeting. Then think of the exact opposite of the worst: people sharing ideas, making friends, getting support, arguing about the implications of YouTube on technical communication.

How would your idea take shape? What, in your wildest dreams, would the STC chapter do for you? How would you make this happen?

As for the rest, we have to see how the participation goes. Hopefully we’ll get a lot of uptake on the forum, then we’ll need some forum moderators. I imagine that the forum and the wiki might be somewhat redundant and that the forum moderator would be better to have.

As an example, Jerome suggested that we have a meeting with examples of work. So if other people are interested in the idea, they can express their interest on the forum, then Jerome can start organizing or someone else who is interested can organize, the leader can ask the chapter for funding, and we can plan and hold the event. We’ve got information on the wiki on how to plan and hold the event, all the cost details, etc.

If you wanted to start a geographically based group on the forum, you could ask for a category to be created and the weblead can do that for you.

If you see a good webinar that you want to organize, post on the forum and see if anyone else is interested. Then get funding from the chapter and organize a place to hold the event.

I don’t know - what else do you want to do? If you want to call a contractors meeting, post in the forum. Hopefully enough people are watching the forum to respond to that post.

Does that help?

The point is that if people are interested in organizing something, they can. But they don’t need to volunteer for a whole year, they can just organize an event that they’re excited about and then be done.

I had seen the thread, I think there are some very good general ideas in it. I just wondered if there was some framework we should be guided by. Like a meeting agenda, if this is an online meeting.

I’m not suggesting you should have put together an agenda :-) I’m wondering if as a group we should start building one that represents what we’re interested in.

I’ll post my suggestions for that to the other forum, so all comments are in one place. Thanks!

If you’re familiar with online meetings and want to propose an agenda, please do! That would be fabulous.

I’m not familiar with ANY of this! That’s why I was hoping to find something to start with. :-)

But we probably all feel that way, so I’ll just put something together and hope it’s useful, or sparks something useful from somebody else.

I’m willing explore Second Life, if anyone would care to join me. I haven’t done this before, but it would be interesting for a number of people to just wade into the water and see how deep we can go before we drown…? This could be another venue for chapter meetings. Maybe we could meet at the virtual Louvre to review Da Vinci’s work as a technical illustrator.
