Principles of Taxonomies

Taxonomy is a new buzz word, but what does it mean and how can it help you? This presentation gives you examples of how taxonomies are used in “real life,” why they’re valuable, how they are applied, the different types of taxonomies, a high level overview of building a taxonomy, resources for learning more, and how you can use this skill at work.

You will learn key concepts such as:

  • How Is Taxonomy Different than Metadata?
  • The Difference Between a Taxonomy Term and a Keyword
  • Two Audiences for the Taxonomy
  • When, and How to Make Updates to the Taxonomy

About the Teacher

If the name sounds familiar it’s because Theresa is a chapter past president and head of Key Pointe Usability Consulting, Inc. We warmly welcome her as the March presenter.Since 2000, Theresa has gained experience in the software and web design fields and moved into information architecture and content strategy.

With a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Davis, her focus is on user needs in a website or software design projects. She is currently completing a Masters of Library and Information Science at San Jose State University (an online program).

This session is appropriate for anyone interested in the structure and organization of digital information.
