Technical Publications Awards

Published: February 2006 in Society News

On January 27, 2006, the Canada West Coast Chapter honoured participants in the 2005 Technical Publications competition. The chapter’s winter party was the cap-off to a successful 2005 competition that thanked judges, entrants, and volunteers who gave their time and expertise.

Judges’ recognition

The competition committee thanked the Snake River, Idaho, chapter for participating in the judging exchange. Their chapter approached ours with the exchange idea based on our similar membership size and estimated number of entries.

The judging exchange process allowed one chapter to judge another chapter’s entries. Participating in a judging exchange benefits communities where the pool of judges and pool of entrants swim together.

Judges receiving a Certificate of Appreciation included Teresa Acob, Debbie Davy (southwestern Ontario), Liessi Häussler, Tracey Martinsen, Matt Rockall, and Sharon Twiss. Anna Nosek assisted with administration support.

Chapter Stats

While one chapter may choose another chapter to judge entries, so too an entrant may submit to another chapter. Entrants from Puget Sound and Alberta chapters chose the CWC Chapter to receive their submissions.

Not all chapters hold a competition but in 2005, 27 did. Some chapters compete in all categories, Technical Publications, Technical Art, and Online, while other chapters evaluate regional talent through a judging exchange.

2005 Competition Winners

Winners are selected by consensus. Three-judge panels evaluate each entry for such qualities as production, design and typography, copyediting, content, organization, and graphics. In addition, a winning publication must meet the stated purpose for the intended audience. Our Snake River partners employed the same criteria we did.

The spirit of the competition aims to inspire communication excellence by acknowledging technical communicators who produce award-winning work. So in this spirit we proudly acknowledge our peers who have achieved a standard of excellence through technical communication.
Winners in the 2005 STC Canada West Coast Technical Publications Competition are:

Award of Merit
Janeen Weir, Leila Meyer from Maximizer Software, Inc. for their training material entry: Maximizer Enterprise 8 eCRM Training Guide
Award of Excellence
K. Michael Brazill, Kyla Teplitz, and Robert Wilson from Applied Precision, LLC (Puget Sound) for their quick reference guide: Getting Started with DeltaVision
Award of Distinction

Best of Show
Janeen Weir, Leila Meyer from Maximizer Software, Inc.: Maximizer Enterprise 8 Administrator’s Guide

Winner Advances

The Maximizer Enterprise 8 Administrator’s Guide entry advanced to international competition where it will compete with other first-round Award of Distinction entries for the title of Best of Show. The international competition took place at STC headquarters in March.

Best of luck to the Award of Distinction entry as it advances to the International Technical Publications round.
