Published: October 2006 in Student View Articles

When you are a student, every dollar counts. While there can be some effort involved in applying for scholarships, you may find the financial reward and recognition are worth it.

If you are a student (regardless of your STC membership status) in a two-year or certificate technical communications program - of which there are a few in British Columbia - you are eligible to apply for STC’s Alpha Sigma fraternity.

Why apply? If you are accepted you will receive a one-year free membership in STC and be recognized as a member of this fraternity. The fraternity recognizes students who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above, demonstrate active participation in STC, and have the potential to contribute to the profession. STC participation may include chapter leadership; chapter and Society meetings and conferences; and STC-related presentations, publications, and honors.

Non-STC activities may be considered if they provide evidence of the applicant’s leadership abilities.

If you are interested, be sure to apply soon. The deadline for postmarked Alpha Sigma applications is November 1, 2006. Read more on the STC Awards pages. Students who are awarded membership in the fraternity will be notified in January.

If you are a student in the last year of your study, be sure to consider applying for STC Canada West Coast’s Julia Broderick Scholarship. The deadline for this year’s application is February 16, 2007; more application details will be posted later this fall.

What’s the value? The Julia Broderick Scholarship winner will receive an $850 award, which can be used to reimburse the following expenses:

STC Membership
Tuition and Fees
Books and class materials
STC conferences
Technical Communication seminars and workshops
