Rahel Anne Bailie, President of Intentional Design Inc. (IDI), and Canada West Coast Chapter past president, has been named an Associate Fellow of the STC.
The STC confers the award of Associate Fellow on nominees who have made significant contributions to the field of technical communication and demonstrated long-term commitment to professional development through membership in the STC. Bailie will accept the award in May at the annual STC conference in Las Vegas.
“It is truly an honour to be recognized by my peers,” says Rahel. “Joining the ranks of the Associates who came before me validates all the work I’ve done, and will continue to do, to raise the profile of technical communication as a much-needed profession.”

Rahel recently completed a three-year term as a Director on the STC international board. She has taught in several post-secondary technical communication programs and, most recently, founded the Canada West Community of CM Pros. She also currently serves as the innovation coordinator for our chapter.
The STC bestows three elective, honorary ranks: Associate Fellow, Fellow, and Honorary Fellow. Local STC CWC members who have previously achieved these ranks are Duncan A. Kent (Associate Fellow) and Sheila C. Jones (Fellow).
In 2001, Vancouver-based world-renowned geneticist, academic and broadcaster Dr. David Suzuki was named an Honorary Fellow of the STC.
Duncan Kent
Duncan has worked as a technical communicator, documentation consultant, and writing instructor since graduating with a Master of Arts degree from the University of British Columbia in 1976. In 1990, he was awarded the designation of CMC (Certified Management Consultant) by Canada’s governing body of management consultants.
Duncan is a founding member and past president of the Canada West Coast Chapter. For more than 12 years he has taught technical writing at Simon Fraser University, and is a member of the Advisory Board to the university’s Writing and Publishing Program. He also owns Duncan Kent & Associates Ltd., a technical communications company based in Vancouver.
Sheila Jones
Sheila Jones was educated at Harvard. Her background in the Humanities includes studies in music, art, Spanish, business administration and instructional design. She joined the Canada West Coast Chapter in 1991 and served as president during the 1995–1996 season. It was during her term as president that she held the first annual strategic planning session, an event that continues to this day.
Sheila has managed the STC’s Honorary Fellows committee for many years and helped give the award to David Suzuki and Pulitzer-prize wining science writer Natalie Angier. She’s also a founding member of the STC house band Rough Drafts, and has sung with them at a number of conferences.
