Judges Recognition
The committee wishes to thank the STC Israel and Alberta chapters whose members participated in the judging exchange. Back in 2005 the Israel chapter approached us with the exchange idea based on our similar membership size and estimated number of entries. They had a number of online entries but we had entered the tech pubs category so we weren’t able to exchange entries of the same type. This year though we entered both online and tech pubs category and with that exchanged tech pubs with Alberta and online entries with Israel. All 3 chapters judged some online entries, which proved more time consuming to judge than technical publications entries. So I want to thank the judges for their patience and perseverance this year with a Certificate of Appreciation.

Chapter Stats
Twenty-eight chapters held competitions—five in Canada. One of last year’s entrants was a judge this year, and one of last year’s judges was an entrant. One of the entrants noted he learned a lot by judging and went back to work and applied the society-level criteria to one of this year’s entries.
The revival of the competition spawned interest in student competition so we are pleased that the competition continues to serve the community. With that, let’s get to the 2006 Competition Winners.
2006 Competition Winners
The spirit of the competition aims to inspire communication excellence by acknowledging technical communicators who produce award-winning work.
Awards do not represent first, second, or third places, but instead are levels of accomplishment with reference to a standard. For any entry to receive an award, it must be thorough, accurate, useful, appropriate, and well executed.
Winners are selected by consensus where three-judge panels evaluate each entry for such qualities as production, design and typography, copyediting, content, organization, and graphics. In addition, a winning publication must meet the stated purpose for the intended audience. Our partners in the judging exchange used the same criteria we did.
So to the winners: When you hang your certificate on your wall you will know that your entry was judged to consistently meet high standards in overall areas.
In this spirit we proudly acknowledge our peers who have achieved a high standard of technical communication. And the winners in the 2006 STC Canada West Coast Technical Publications Competition are:
Award of Merit
Wendy Lee, Agilent Technologies, Inc. Quick Reference Guide, Agilent N2X Packets and Protocols
Lisa Siddons, Chris Ninkovich, and Matthew Rockall, SpeedLine Solutions, Inc., Quick Reference Guide, Quick Reference Sheets for Pizza Hut ADF
