My business card reads “Good Copy for Good Causes,” so my interest in not-for-profits is right out there. However, I work in all sectors. I write short pieces of documentation, work tools, Web pages and marketing communications. I structure and administer websites. The clients I prize are those whose operations are carbon neutral, or getting there, and I like to earn my living by promoting any product or service that helps all Canadians achieve a more nearly sustainable way of life.
I was one of the innovators of distance education (open university style) in BC and then managed public education projects at the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia. There I took the leap to creating ICBC’s first website. Content management became my ongoing focus.
And Darren Barefoot is right when he says technical communicators are ideally suited to moderating blogs and overseeing other kinds of social media. For one of my clients I have moved beyond posting website news and events to writing an informal YouTube script and keeping an eye on a Facebook page. I find that a practised hand can almost always make good communications better.
