Programs coordinator or Competition manager (in alternate years) I joined STC because of my editing instructor. Back in Boston, my home, work, school, gym, and volunteer organization were less than 2 miles apart. In nice weather I would walk the route but there was no way I could have fit STC involvement into a tight schedule. Almost by accident, I realized that getting involved in the technical publications competition was what energized me. So much so that I reserved our company cafeteria for judges training and recruited non-STC colleagues to give judging a try at least once. The resulting benefits carried over when in 2005 my husband and I left Boston for Vancouver. Volunteering was my game plan while we waited to secure work permits. We learned about the local tech community’s many events and I got to know not only STC-CWC members but also BC Editors and CM Pros. In particular, I’d recognize Heather, Susan and Rahel at such gatherings. Our casual acquaintances lead to new friendships and employment opportunities. And so another year begins with STC-CWC. I am grateful to the chapter for helping me get my footing. Now that I’m a Canadian citizen my next goal is to visit Cuba. |
