Chapter Wins Pacesetter Award for 2011

Chapter Wins Pacesetter Award for Information Interview Service

This award will be given at the Honors Banquet at the STC Summit. The citation will read:
Canada West Coast:  For offering an information interview service for the dozens of people wanting to speak to experienced chapter technical communicators about our profession.

On behalf of the chapter, thank you Karen Rempel for proposing the IIS, then implementing this brilliant idea! Read more in the March issue of Intercom.

About the Pacesetter Awards Program
STC’s Community Pacesetter Award recognizes the successful implementation of innovative community operations. STC offers the Pacesetter Award because the Society values the improvement of community operation, and especially when beneficial innovation can be shared with other communities so that they can enjoy similar benefits.

Unlike STC’s other Community Achievement awards, which recognize communities for consistent strength in many varied activities, the Pacesetter Award recognizes the successful implementation of a single beneficial innovation that may be implemented by other STC communities.

To help ensure the widespread value of Pacesetter Award-winning innovations, winning applications shall be included on the Leadership website accessible to STC Community leaders.

Karen Rempel published in March issue of Intercom

We are excited to let you know that an article about Karen Rempel’s brainchild, the Information Interview Service or IIS, appears in the March issue of Intercom. In it she describes the impetus and a process for implementing the service. It’s become a stalwart replacement to a stagnant mentoring program.

The IIS is a simple yet brilliant idea—pair aspiring writers with seasoned ones. The only surprise was its success—by month three the Information Interview Service topped the number of interviews the chapter projected for the year.

It seemed natural for the revitalized chapter to tell the whole STC organization about the IIS. Naturally, we applied for a Pacesetter award. The Information Interview Service meets the criteria:

  • A Community implemented an innovative activity
  • The activity furthers the goals of the Society or the Community
  • The activity can be replicated by other Communities

Winners will be announced at the Honors Banquet at the STC Summit. Fingers crossed.

President's Message: April 2012 Digest

This issue we highlight events and new beginnings. The chapter will be cited at the STC Summit for winning the Pacesetter award, the contractors group meets in May, members acclaim officers for 2012/13 and the search for VP is extended, just like in 2011, 2010, 2009…

Feature: April program report: The Content Strategy Paradox

Rahel Baille, a vocal advocate of content strategy, addressed its challenges. Realizing the connection between business communications, technical communication, information architecture, usability, and content and information management enabled her to develop the role of content strategist. However, most companies tackle content strategy from the angle of web design or marketing. Rarely is actual content addressed.

Viewpoint: Top 10 things not to do at an information interview!

Technical writing students can be expected to regard informational interviews as an important step in beginning their careers.  Karen Rempel relates her recent experience with a student who demonstrated a startling lack of awareness at his interview.
